What on Earth is Foxes in the Night?
For those of you not in the know (and let’s face it, chances are you’re not), last year I decided to take part in a few game jams on Itch.io. It was a fascinating and titilating experience that combined my love of prose, and overly-complicated mechanics. During the same period of time, I got involved with a new TTRPG community over on twitter, and to be frank, I’ve never felt so welcomed to an online community in my life.
How do these two things relate?
I’m glad you asked.
Say what you want about Twitter, but there’s ideas aplenty kicking around. One fateful day @titanomachyRPG posted about a new roleplaying system they were developing called Caltrop Core featuring my favourite of dice, the D4. Safe to say I was intrigued. Thus Foxes in the Night came to be - a new TTRPG utilising Caltrop Core in a world full of magic and hackers.
So Why?
- Caltrops = Ninjas
- Kitsune = Ancient Fox Spirits
- I’m a Sci-Fi Nerd = CYBERPUNK
It’s really as simple as that. During one of my many rabbit-holes whilst on the internet, I came across the incredibly informative repository of Japanese folklore Yokai.com, which markets itself as the illustrated database of Japanese folklore. Several days later, I emerged with a semi-formed idea of what I wanted from the game.
- Story-Driven adventures
- Fluid, dynamic combat mechanics
- A solid, passive skill set
- Non-apocalyptic setting
- Dice-pool mechanics
- An in-built, unique leveling system
- Animal Masks
- Corpocratic Society
Elevator Pitch
Here we go;
Foxes is the Night is a Built on Caltrop Core TTRPG where you play as Kuda-Gitsune, stealth operatives in the employ of major corporations, trying to make their way in a world where sunlight has gone. Utilising the mystical power of the Kitsunebi, the Kuda-Gitsune embody the characteristics of the animal masks they wear, and carry out the “family” business. In a world where technology and magic combine, hack your way through security before releasing magical powers to further the goals of your corporate overloards. Or break free. The city is yours…
